Guardians of the Galaxy – Movie Review

When you take five misfit aliens, great CGI, experienced actors, a touch of adult humor, an action filled story based on a comic book, and set it to clips of 1970′s pop-songs, you get a fun romp though an alternate movieverse.

I walked into this film without any familiarity with the two comic book series it is based on, and perhaps I am lucky. Without any preconceptions as to storyline, plot, or characters, I could sit back and enjoy the ride, and what a ride it was.

Of course the storyline is predictable, but anyone who has been a sci-fi fan for forty odd years can pretty much figure out any modern sci-fi film before the second half. But that did not matter, as Guardians is so fun you forget that you have seen this all before in a different galaxy displayed on a different screen.

This film allowed me to engage in one of my favorite movie games, “Who is that actor?” Some, like Glenn Close and John C. Riley are easy targets, others are not so much. I challenge anyone to identify Karen Gillan (Dr. Who’s Amy Pond, for you non-whovians) without peeking at IMDB.com first. And don’t forget Stan Lee’s cameo.

This is not a film for the little ones, rated at PG-13. True, my five year old would like the spaceships, the anthropomorphic raccoon Rocket, and caring tree creature Groot. But, while the adult situations are mild and gore almost non-existent, the language is a bit blue and several of the jokes will be over their heads.

So, tune out and watch on for a delightful sci-fi experience. And, I will warn you now, the film will leave wanting to recreate the mix tape (remember mix tapes?) “Awesome Mix Vol. 1″ and wondering what volume 2 will contains. Don’t want to create your own, the songs are available on iTunes as “Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (Original Movie Soundtrack).
